   Hi,

   I have the same problem as you mentioned in this article. One day my pc is restarting again and again, so I switched it off. then started again but pc is not booting. I thought that OS is crashed. I tried to installed the Windows Xp with SP2 but when getting the harddisk option there are not partitions as earlier there are 4 partitions. Also I am not able to format the harddisk. I was getting the message that harddisk is not accessible.

   I purchased new harddisk and installed Windows XP. Configure the old harddisk as slave. In device manager I am able to see the harddisk and also the status is working properly.
   But when clicked on Volumes, I was got the following message:

   Disk Disk1
   Type Unknown
   Status Unreadable
   Partition Style Not Applicable
   Capacity 0Mb

   Also in Disk Management, I am getting new harddisk information, not getting the old information. My old disk has approx. 60Gb Data. I want to recover only some of the data.

   Please help me to recover the data.

   V. Venkat,

   Ok It sounds like file system corruption, due to what I can not be sure. The boot loop could have been cause by many things, but more often then not a virus. If you would like I can remote in to your computer and take a look at the drive let you know what it wrong. So we can at least get you on right the path to getting the data off.

   Regarding the Seagate problem. Check the serial number of the drive to see if it is affected with the buggy firmware.

   By all means copy the data to a new hard drive.

   If the firmware has not be update then the drives can be afflectected in two ways. One is a Busy state which prevents the computer BIOS from displaying the drive in the POST screen upon bootup. The oher problem is that the drive’s capacity is shown as 0GB. I would contact Seagate support first since if Seaate determines that the firmware is at fault they will recover the data and send the fixed drive back to you w/o charge.

   It makes a huge difference in rather the BIOS won’t detect the drive, or if Windows can’t find the partitions. One is a lot more expensive to fix since you have to send the drive in if it won’t even be detected by the motherboard’s firmware. It sounds like you need to have them do a remote restoration service. Hopefully, it’s just Windows that can’t see the data.

   I installed the Linux on F portion. When i clears the MBR by fdisk/mbr.

   My Primary C partition got corrupt, Logical D drive also shown as E:, F:, …. Z: and i LOST MY E AND F PARTITION..

   PLEASE HELP ME. WHAT CAN I DO NOW? Which Software i have to use to recover my E AND F Drive Partition…

   i built my first computer 6 months ago with the help of “my computer dork”. i have the barracuda 7200.11 1000Gbytes and it just all of sudden crashed. the only thing i noticed was the picture was slightly glitchy maybe only a few minutes before the “oh no”. i just thought it was my wireless conection. my buddy knew instantly that it was f@#&ed off when he manually rebooted the computer and it said “insert boot disk and press enter”. then he went into the computer by pressing delete right after start up. my computer wasnt recognizeing my hard drive after changing the cables it still did nothing. so he pluged his drive up in that bitchand it saw it. i just got the fax from seagate about the recovery process. IF ANYONE HAS ANY HELPFULL KNOWLEDGE PLEASE E-MAIL ME SOON . theres no telling how bad those F&!$s will rape me and still get nothing from it but a sore ass.

   Can the hard drive be seen by another computer when hooked up as a slave? If so we can remote in and recover the files. Also can you post the full drive number i.e. ST31000340AS

    Hey hey i have the seagate barracuda 1000GB serial ST31000333AS and the other day it just stopped working, i noticed when i went to play music and it has my music n some games on it. i then restarted my compy, n went into bios and my bios couldn’t detect it…

    After going through switching cables and even dismantling and rebuilding my compy bios still did not see it, i then loaded windows as normal, and found that windows can detect it, my bios cant, and when im in device manager, in properties of the HDD im getting the following msg in the volumes tab:

    Disk: Disk 2
    Type: Unknown
    Status: Unreadable
    Partition Style: Not Applicable
    Capacity: 0 MB
    Unallocated Space: 0 MB
    Reserved Space: 0 MB

    Is anyone able to help me get the HDD working again, or atleast recover the data so i can back it up ?

    The drive is Bricked which in English means it has an overflow in of errors do to malfunctioning ondisk firmware. The service area of the drive is now corrupt you can try seagates firmware fix but that is more of a preventative fix to a problem than an after the fact crash remedy. More than likely the necessary measures to fix this problem will need to be addressed by a company specializing in data recovery as the Service Area of the drive has become corrupt.

    Service Area- The firmware on the Printed Circuit Board (PCB) is a roadmap to the real firmware which is located on the platters of the drive. The Service Area (SA) contains defects list both at the time of manufacturing, grown defects lists while in use, overlays, adaptive info, Drive ID, all the info the drive needs to run.

    Hi, I’m hoping someone can help. I have the Seagate 7200.11 ST3500320AS 500GB HDD. I noticed my PC running sluggishly and then a few days later I get an I/O error when trying to read the drive. The BIOS recognizes the drive every time I boot (now the drive is hooked up via an external USB enclosure).

    Whenever I turn the drive on (in the USB enclosure), the PC takes forever to recognize it. Device manager recognizes it as “ST350032 OAS USB Device” and thinks it is running properly.

    If I plug the drive into the MB and boot, the BIOS recognizes the drive and gives it the correct capacity, LZone, etc.

    But Explorer sees the drive as a generic drive “Drive I” and there is no data.

    The drive spins up very quietly, no vibration or clicking.

    I have upgraded the firmware, but that didn’t help.

    Any ideas?

    I was thinking about finding another drive and swapping PDB’s.

    Of course, I wouldn’t care about this drive failing if I had backed up my data, which I didn’t.

    Steve, this was emailed to me by an engineer familiar with the Seagate issues:

    This is NOT a firmware issue sounds like on of the heads is having trouble reading. The major indication would be the IO error drives that are bricked do not do this. I would clone the drive in DOS using any DOS based tool as Windows tries to read each sector multiple times; therefore, if the drive is having trouble reading it just makes it worse. Use Speed Clone or any other DOS base tool to clone to another working drive.

    If you need to recover your files I used NTFS FOR DOS and xxcopy installed on a thumb drive and used a usb external drive and managed to recover my files these programs are free it takes a while to recover depending on the amout of data so be patient
    you have to know the old dos commands

    here’s my problem with my ST31000340AS, i am trying to run the new firmware for the drive hoping it wold fix it. my ST31000340AS Seagate Drive is not my master drive, if i run the firmware using my master drive and my ST31000340AS Drive as a Slave Drive, after system restarts, it wouldnt do the update since (i guess) its not the Master Drive of the system.

    any ideas on how to fix it or how to run the firmware?

    I guess the first question would be what is wrong with the drive? As far as it not being the master drive have you tried unplugging the other drive completely from the machine while you try this process it would be bad to firmware revise the wrong drive. Unplugging the unaffected drive would make this situation much more safe.

    Hi,
    Recently my barracuda 7200 has had errors. The bios sort of gets stuck in a loop, you can hear it making a recurring loading sound, and the cursor freezes up every 5 seconds or so. Is there anything I can do about this short of buying a new one?

    My Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 stopped working.
    The initial symptom: Windows froze
    After reboot th BIOS does not recognize the drive any more.
    Drove is quietly ticking.
    When I hooked it as a slave to another computer, the computer stopped recognizing both drives.
    Any idea?
