You should be able to acces your files from any computer is this is a portable storage device. What seems to be the problem when you try to access your files?

Im having problems accessing my data stored in my WD 250Gb MPE. These files were stored from a different computer (office) and im trying to retrieve it on another computer (home) but im having a hard time doing it, or i must have been doing it wrong. Is there a way to do retrieve files stored from a different profile to another? Appreciate your feedback on this, thanks.

Eihab and Simona, When a drive is clicking, it usually means that the heads are failing. It might be possible to remove the hard drive out of the case and hook it up as a slave hard drive. The links will take you to our How To Slave A Hard Drive post with video and pictures. If you can't remove the drive and slave it and it is not being recognized, then your options are limited to data recovery. You can call us at 866-438-6932 and get a quote on data recovery. If it is recognized by the bios after being hooked up as a slave then we have free tools that can get your files off. I have the exact same problem as Simona above. I own one of those WD 250G HD I bought from COSCO but it was working for 6 months and I have a tone of valuable files on it . One day it started doing exactly as Simona says (It spins initially, makes a strange clicking sound 4 times, then nothing) and I can not access anything any more. Could some one recommend a way to recover the data on it.

Hi, I got a WD 160 sata 2.5″ hdd in an enclosure, but planing t use it as a primary drive. The drive has not worked ever since I got it (gift !). WD Data Lifeguard tools recognizes it as “Generic External” when I plug it into my laptop via a usb port. However, it’s not listed in “my computer”. It spins initially, makes a strange clicking sound 4 times, then nothing. I tried to swap it in as primary drive, and “hard drive not recognized, please attach the hard drive in the right position”. I do not know what to do with it. Repairing it through WD would cost me more than its own store price.
Is there any tool that can repair it and make it functional?

First, thanks for your site.

Second, I have both the WD 120gb and the 160gb version of the HD and love them. I bought them at COSTCO where each came with a very handy (and necessary) carrying pouch.

I have seen the 320gb at COSTCO for about $140 and also on sale at Best Buy
