I have a drive which has lost some dll files so will not start up. I have tried connecting to another computer but will not transfer certain folders as windows says they are protected. How can I get round this as would take forever to Authorise every single file as a new ownership of the files on the other computer!!
I am trying to retrieve these files for a friend and needs to be done asap.

I have an older HP which decided to get a mind of its own and will not start at all. Has power but thats all it has. I have another newer HP and was thinking of taking the old one and make it a slave so that I can retrieve some programs and data. If I can do this, would it be feasible to move those programs and files to an external drive and then reformat the slave and use it as an additional drive OR can I just delete all the windows files on it and be OK. Admittedly, I am a novice at working on the inside of a computer other than adding memory. I would sincerely appreciate you opinion and/or guidance if you have the time. Your site and the video is the best I've seen and very well presented. Will tell everyone I know about it. Thanks so much for your time.

So I have an OS HD that I can't boot from because nvata.sys (nForce HD driver) is missing / corrupted (it appears to have been hit by a rootkit and AV quarantined it).

Q being: should I just hook the subject drive into another PC as a second drive to get the files, or should I slave it and do recovery? Seems like just hooking it up as a second drive would suffice, but I didn't know if it would confuse things since it was a boot/OS drive.

Both PCs using NTFS so no worries there -- damaged is XP Pro and good one is Vista. All I really need to get off the old drive is some pictures and the Outlook mailbox if possible.

Great tutorial by the way!!!

Pulled out 2 hds out of failed HP laptop. I put both in external drive case intending to use as external hard drive back ups. The second hd (listed as data when looking at my computer and the drive) allows me to copy data, but he the primary, when hooked up via USB ( says OS before the drive info) seems to want to "control" the computer. Is there something I need to do to access data on the old primary drive as this drive has all the important data I'm trying to copy to new computer....hope this makes sense....thanks

Thanks for this information. I didn't even know how to identify my hard drive until I read this. I was able to find it and remove it, which was all I needed. Great information and pictures.

Thank you for your very detailed instructions. I haven't touched the old beast for quite some time. My wife uses it for taxes and stuff and suddenly it wouldn't boot up one day. I was pretty sure it was the video card so I thought about sticking it in our other old beast. I did it on my own and forgot that I needed to set the pins. If it wasn't for this tutorial I would have probably never figured it out and ended up chucking the whole thing in the trash.
And best of all, my wife now thinks I'm a hero. The drive worked in the other machine and we are able to access all of our files. So thank you!

Hi, I was trying to boot from my XP cd to remove a worm (because worm caused user logon screen to log me on then immediately log me off again) but somehow my system went into installing XP again. I pulled the cd to stop the process, but now can't do anything at all without system asking me to re-insert XP cd to continue setup.
I have since installed a new HDD set as master with the old set as slave, installed XP on the new drive & checked that all worked well. Powered down, connected the old drive (slave) & booted up. Screen now hangs after identifying that there are two HDD's & offers 'press del to enter setup'. If I leave it long enough I get 'primary drive failure - F1 to Continue, or DEL to enter setup. If I hit F1 the master HDD is bypassed & secondary boot drive (old HDD) boots & puts me back to square one asking me to install XP cd so that setup can continue. It seems as if this is the only thing I can do i.e. to complete the setup process (which will wipe the HDD of about 20 GB of music) then turn to your recovery software.
My question is will your s/ware be able to recover my music/pics after Windows has been re-installed on this drive?
Thanks in advance.

Hello.

I recently had bad case of virus infections on an old HDD, with lots of office data on it. It infected XP badly, and I had to get a new HDD with a fresh install of XP. Both HDDs are the relatively older versions, with the 40 pin connector and the 4 pin standard for power.

Since, I have the old HDD as a slave. The computer boots up, telling me that the HDD still works. However, I can't access it through My Computer, it says it needs to format it first. I am worried, that if I go ahead and format, I stand to loose all my data.

Is this true? Can I use RAI or DTI Data recovery to get all my data back? I don't wish to have an OS on this drive, just need it for data storage now.

Thank you for any and all help.

I have a malfunctioning western digital SATA hard drive that appeared to be Windows related, i was getting an error message along the lines of "missing or corrupt file windows system32 config system." I attempted to retrieve the data using a hard drive enclosure but was not successful and did not attempt to set the drive as a slave/secondary. I took the hard drive to a data recovery company that diagnosed the problem as being file system damage but nevertheless could recover all the data, as you can imagine this option is very costly. Therefore my question becomes if i attempt setting the hard drive to a slave/secondary drive what is the likelihood i will be able to recovery my data without having to resort to recovery software and if i attempt this would i compromise the integrity of the data?

Thanks in advance

I want to make a "bit-by-bit" copy clone hard drive and cannot find the software or format called MTL that is part of a data recovery software that my tech says will permit him to recover the data while I proceed with the use of my own drive. He says I cannot use Ghost and I cannot do it over USB. It has to be an internally attached blank hard drive that I make the bit by bit clone onto. I see various file by file, sector by sector, byte by byte but not bit by bit. Where would I get this needed MTL and what does it stand for anyway?

I have a hard drive that is running spin right and seems to be going no where. Is it possible to connect it to my laptop and and see if I can download the data off of it that I want.

Please advise as how I would be able to accomplish that.

Thanks

Hi I have a SATA 2.5 inch hard drive (Hitachi part #: HTS541616J9SA00) in my laptop, it crashed.

Further research shows that this has no slave/ master switch. Can you please advise how do I make this HD slave?

Hi Jacqui:

Though this post is nearly three years old, you helped me immensely, as I was able to save our important (yet non-backed-up???) files, on what I thought was a completely dead drive. Wish that I knew that it was this easy several months ago when our HD failed (originally thought it was the motherboard).

Worst case, thought I would have to bribe one my work's IT guys to ghost it on the DL. Thanks again!

Jesse, you can use our program Recover It All to scan the drive and extract your data. The master file table or boot ini is probably screwed up. http://www.dtidata.com/resourcecenter/2008/11/25/hard-drive-recovery-freeware-software/

If you plug it into the second IDE slot, maybe unplug CD drive and it will auto slave.
