Mike,
It will be like having another hard drive that you can access all the time. Kind of like and external except that you cant be removing it all the time if it is inside your computer.

I have an old computer that is no longer used, but there are tons of data on the hard drive that I would like to be able to access using a second computer. However, I would like to connect the original hard drive to the new computer as a slave. So, question: if I slave the original hard drive on the new computer, then will this be just like using an external hard drive? In other words, I would like to have the old hard drive as an additional drive on my machine that I can access just like if I used an external hard drive (with the new computer's hard drive still in charge of running the OS like usual). Is this how it works?

If this is the case, then I'll be able to just permanently use the old hard drive on my new computer as an additional disk. Sorry if its redundant, and thanks in advance for any help.

Hi -
Does the OS of the master need to match that of the slave? Do OSs make any difference when slaving a hard drive?

Thanks!

Question 1). I have a seagate, Barracuda ATA IV 80 gbytes hard drive. Model ST380021A. How would I set this up with the jumpers as a secondary hard drive. 5 options on the jumper. 1 is slave where I pull the pin out & leave it out, 2 is Master or single slave. 3 is Enable cable select is where the pin is. 4 is Master with NON ATA compatable slave. 5 is Limit drive capacity to 32 Gbytes. Which one do I use?
Question 2). If I set my jumper to slave or master on my western digital hard drive, Do I have to reformat or repartition my hard drive with my windows all over again?

Don't know if this is right place to ask but here goes. I have an ACER travelmate laptop with no hard drive, and Western Digital laptop hard drive with no OS. How do I get an OS on the hard drive with only recovery disks from E-machines pc that crapped out last year? Or can I? Can I clone the laptop hard drive from my gateway pc that is still working? Will there be compatibility problems with the gateway software system?

Looking for any help I can get. Thanks.

Don,

Yes you can slave the Windows XP Pro drive into the Windows 7 machine. You will need to take control of folders as you go through the hard drive in order to gain access to the data. This is a fairly easy task to accomplish, just type "take control of folder Windows 7" in to Google and you should find a blog to explain how to do it.

Mike,

I would say as long as the messed up drive is the SLAVE or in sata2 slot you should be Good to go. Once Windows boots you should be able to go into windows explorer and see your data. Let me know what happens!

Maria,
A hard drive not showing up could be many things. If the drive is that old it could be that the connector you are trying down not support it. It could be that that Windows & does not support the File System on the drive. Last but not least it could be that the hard drive is no longer functioning. It might be a good idea to find a local computer store that has some talent with older equipment and may be able to hook it up and test to see if the hard drive is being seen properly

Hello!
I slaved my Compaq 7922 with Windows 98 harddrive and using the Pro IDE/Sata/USB cable adapter to transfer old files to my new computer but it isn't showing up when I connect it.
I am running Windows 7 on my new laptop. The old harddrive is running but when I connect it to my laptop it isn't being detected.

Novice? Enough knowledge and skill to break it some more...

Never done anything like this, slave.

What happened to me is on a recent reinstall, some months ago now, not everything was working. What brought it my attention was I tried to play a DVD with music and video but the system didn't have what it needed. I loaded a Roxio CD that came with the machine hoping to get the right things the system needed.

What I got was a system that would not boot without a password even in safe mode. There is or was no password installed. Couldn't get around it but I could get in with UBCD. I'm not real proficient with UBCD either, remember that enough knowledge and skill to break it some more thing...

So being really tired and distraught I decided to do a repair. Reinstall CD, enter, R, not CD, R I think, there could be more steps. I guess the enter, R is recovery ?? Told ya I'm not real good... Short version of long story after repair I got the following...

STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error}
The Windows Logon Process system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0x00000080 (0x00000000 0x0000000)
The system has been shutdown.

Can't find away around it or access my info which of course is not backed up and of great importance. Worse, my wife's info which is even more important is there to so now I'm really in deep... Funny the now broken machine has the backup info from Mr Shakey I'm on now. Mr Shakey is still in shake down after some grave issues. Got it working just enough as the other broke. Of course I never got to transfer data... Naturally...

That brought me here with an internet search for slaving a HD with a bad OS. What I'm wondering is, if after doing as you stated above to slave it will the OS on the currently shakey machine, that was a can worms and another very long novel, be able to access all our info? What can I expect or what will be likely?

If I break Mr shakey I'm really... I hope to avoid that but you know Murphy and PCs...

I really hate computers... Thanks!

Anonymous

The reason is a physical problem with the hard usually caused by BAD SECTORS. It would be a good idea to try and clone that drive in DOS and then run data recovery software on the clone

Qn: I did all the mentioned steps above. But the slave disk slowed down my computer,it barely logs into windows. What may be the problem?(slave disk is 200GB and the master is 20GB. Could this be a problem.!)

Ian,

Yes it is possible, in most cases NOT all there should be an old PATA port for your CD ROM drive. Also you should be able to find some kind of cable converter .. SATA to PATA. Hope that helps

Is it possible to set up old PATA HDDs as slaves on a modern PC? I imagine not, but I thought it was worth asking.

My XP hard drive would not boot or even repair using original XP install disc. Purchased new hard drive, installed it with XP. I followed your steps and made the new HD master and installed old HD as slave. Started computer and under properties both HD's show with the old HD showing 14ooo files. However there is no documents and pictures showing. Also I cannot transfer anything to the new HD.
Any help would be most appreciated

Rich,

A lot of times the files are going to be in a USER profile and be inaccessible. You can try taking control of the folder or use recovery software like Recover It All to copy the files off which will strip off the permissions.

Hi Jacqui. I'm just new here and been reading the thread. It seems that you can help me regarding the lost files from my external hard drive which was accidentally deleted while formatting my friend's computer. We've been trying to recover it for almost a week and it seems that the IT specialist who was fixing our computers gave up trying. I am really desperate to retrieve the files which was approximately around 45GB. I had purchased a recovery file software online and it seems it doesn't help. Will you help me which recovery software is the best to use just to retrieve all the lost files without damaging it? Please, please. thank you.
