So, as I help customers, I find that I spend a lot of time trying to explain what they have either heard from me, or from other data recovery companies. I thought it would be fun to do a few article on “What we say” and “What we mean”.

So on to the fun stuff.

What we say: The system area of your hard disk has been seriously corrupted.

What we mean: Either some kind of virus or other “malware” type worm has destroyed the area of your data, which would point out where your data is at. Or you have destroyed this area by either fdisking your drive or just formatting it.

What we say: This is the most catastrophic data recovery situation to be in.

What we mean: Most if not all your data is gone, and for some reason we don’t want to tell you that outright. The fact is no customer likes to hear that diagnosis so it seems we have come up with this term to help ease the blow. (Like hearing the word Catastrophic being used about your data is easing the blow.)

What we say: That must be an anomaly in the data.

What we mean: We have no idea why exactly you are seeing what you are seeing. More then likely it is a case of miscommunication between the technician and the user. (This is a very common problem with technicians and users, because we can never be sure of the customers level of expertise.)

What we say: This scan could take a little while.

What we mean: More then likely the scan will take about 2 hours.
