Hard Drive Recovery and Hard Drive Repair Services Provided by DTI Data Recovery

Hard Drive Repair and Hard drive recovery:

Hard Drive Recovery is what we do best. The main cause of catastrophic data loss can often be traced directly to a physical hard drive crash. Hard drive recovery and hard drive repair is a top priority of ongoing R&D by our data recovery Engineers.

If your drive is making clicking sounds or other strange noises, do NOT try any additional recovery attempts. A hard drive continuously run while in a degraded state can lead to platter damage, possibly making recovery impossible. Fill out an Online Data Recovery Quote or call 866-438-6932 for a free quote.

DTI Data knows how important your data is to you; we strive to improve our techniques each and every day to effectively recover data from any physically or mechanically malfunctioning hard disk drive.

DTI Data's engineers collaborate with our research and development team to keep current with recent changes in hard drive technology and recovery techniques. Often our team develops new recovery methods prior new storage releases to the general public.

Hard Drive Repair:

In order to recover the data on the hard drive there is an area on the platters that must be read in order for any data to be recovered from the defective drive. The area on disk that is crucial to drive functions is called the System Area. The following is a brief explanation of what the System Area is and why it is important.

The System Area is a reserved space dedicated to hard drive's own needs, such as: storing SMART logs, defect list at time of manufacturing, defect reallocation tables (grown defect list), program code (overlays), Max LBA (drives total size), head maps, basically all the information the drive needs to operate. Data on a hard drive is encoded several times to make sure the data is read correctly. There is no absolute positive or negative the data is magnetic so the drive needs to verify the proximity of the positive or negative side of the pole.

The EEPROM chip located on the PCB (printed circuit board) contains only a small part of the firmware; its primary role is to spin up the spindle and un-park heads so the drive can read the remainder of the firmware from the Service Area of the platters.

The System Area is not accessible with standard ATA commands; it cannot be read or written with any software because the protocol is vendor and drive family-unique.
Furthermore, hard drive vendors do not disclose any information about their hard drive System Area structure or how to access it at all.

Rest assured we have decades of experience in hard drive repair and recovery of data on-disk.

We want to make this stressful time as pleasant as possible. After receiving your hard drive we will enter your details into our database and assign it a unique case number. We will then inform you that we have received your hard drive with details on logging into the ticketing system to track the progress of your recovery. An engineer will walk you through every step of the data recovery process.

Hard Drive Recovery Costs

DTI Data does not charge a diagnostic fee for a single hard drive recovery. We do not wish to charge for telling you what you already know, we also do not charge if your data is not recovered. Our hard drive recovery guarantee should put you at ease, knowing we will not charge unless we consider 100% of your data recovered*. We only get paid if we do our job. Typically, turnaround time is between 2 and 5 days upon receiving the drive, we also have expedite service available if needed. Our main priority at all times is your data.

Clicking hard drives can indicate a head problem caused by the heads going into a seek pattern because they cannot read the platters properly, causing a clicking sound. DTI can remove and replace the heads inside of our cleanroom, allowing the data to be extracted from the failed hard drive.

Non Physical (Logical) Hard Drive Data Recovery

There are cases where the hard drive is not physically malfunctioning, referred to as a "Logical Data Recovery". Data could be lost due to accidental deletion, repartition, formatting or a virus. In many of these cases our data recovery software can get your data back.

* A diagnostic fee may be applied if the drive has been opened outside of DTI's Cleanroom

Hard Drive Shipping Instructions

Correctly packaging your media is critical to ensure a proper recovery. If you have any questions about packaging your device please contact us here. Otherwise, please consider these tips:

  • Remove the media from your computer if possible; get expert help if needed.
  • Use bubble wrap for any hard disk or other media you send to us. Remember: this equipment can be very sensitive to shock. Don't be afraid to "overprotect" your media.

Electrostatic Discharge (ESD), often called "static electricity" in a technical environment can seriously damage media or data devices. This can be either sudden catastrophic failure, or latent failure, with gradual degradation over time, resulting in eventual failure.

How To Avoid ESD:
  • Before moving your computer, hard drive or other component, discharge any static electricity by touching a grounded metal object, like a plugged-in computer chassis.
  • Handle your hard drive with care by picking it up on its sides. Try not to touch the top or bottom of the hard disk.
  • If you have the original packaging for your media, you can use that to ship to us.
Otherwise, simply follow these directions:

1. Place the device in an anti-static bag or similar material.

2. Use a box at least twice as large as the device, so it can be suspended in the center of the box. We recommend two inches of packaging material all around for a hard drive weighing two pounds.

3. Package contents with foam, bubble wrap, or even crumpled newspaper so it will remain in the center of the box.

4. If you are sending a computer, server or a laptop then it is even more critical to properly package it. Proper cushioning is not only essential for protecting the data, but also for the device as well. Consider using six inches of insulation or more, adding additional insulation for heavier devices.

When you send us your drive or other media, be sure to label your package as FRAGILE, and also please include the completed and signed work order request form.
